To the Editor The theme issue on conflict of interest (COI) examined many facets of the topic but one aspect relevant to medical publications was not raised—the intellectual bias of peer reviewers. Drs Fontanarosa and Bauchner mentioned that “reviewers are expected to disclose potential COIs (financial or otherwise) to the editors at the time they are invited to review.” However, disclosure of COIs may not exclude indoctrinated or subconscious biases that may affect the review process. Although some journals deliberately blind editors and reviewers to submitting authors and institutions, this is not standard.
